Taipei— A Japanese-owned company has begun selling its own erectile dysfunction (ED) drug, Viagra.
Viagra is the brand name of its pharmaceutical, but it is also the brand name of a drug used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, the most common form of high blood pressure in the lungs, and for treating chest pain.
In a statement on its website, Pfizer Inc. said it will start selling the drug to people who have had heart failure or angina, or severe high blood pressure, as an ED treatment.
“The drug is not intended to cure the underlying health problems in people with heart disease or angina,” the statement said.
The drug is available in a generic form that Pfizer’s patent for Viagra has expired.
It was the first generic drug to be approved for use in the U. S., but it will be manufactured by a different company, Teva Pharmaceuticals.
The company has been looking for an affordable and effective way to treat sexual health issues in patients who have been prescribed ED medications.
In February, Pfizer said it would begin selling the drug to people who have been diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension as an ED treatment.
